By Sam Hellman on 03. Apr, 2009

In her 38th season as a head coach and 14th at Rutgers, C. Vivian Stringer will be enshrined in the Hall of Fame according to a report in the Newark Star Ledger.

According to the report, a person familiar with the induction process said that Stringer will be selected Monday at the Final Four, just one week after reaching her fifth straight Sweet 16 at Rutgers.

“The Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame is one of those breathless, high emotional entities that speak to the best in the game,” Stringer said after learning of her nomination last month. “To love something as much as I love the game of basketball and to even be considered for this amazing honor, it is truly humbling. I want to appreciate this moment.”

Stringer’s induction ceremony will take place in Springfield, Mass. Sept. 10-12 as she may join other basketball legends such as Michael Jordan and David Robinson.

Rutgers one and done at Big East Tournament

By Sam Hellman on 10. Mar, 2009

The 15th seeded Scarlet Knights were unable to pull off the third consecutive upset in the first round of the Big East Tournament, falling 61-50 to Notre Dame at the Garden.

Rutgers continued its trend of keeping it close by staying within six points of the Fighting Irish until the three-minute mark of the second half behind the long range shooting of Big East All-Freshman guard Mike Rosario.

Rosario finished the game with 12 points on 5-of-17 shooting while junior center Hamady N’Diaye led the Scarlet Knights with 14 points. N’Diaye missed just one shot, pulled in five boards and had two blocks.

N’Diaye also defended well, holding Notre Dame forward Luke Harangody to a 17.6 percent shooting clip and just seven points.

Guard Tory Jackson led Notre Dame with 12 points and seven rebounds as the Irish advance to the second round of the Big East Tournament.

Rutgers cut down after first half lead … again

By Sam Hellman on 04. Mar, 2009

Despite taking a 20-19 lead into halftime against No. 25 Syracuse, Rutgers fell apart in the second half yet again and fell 70-40 against the Orange for yet another Big East loss.

Syracuse put together a 14-0 run midway through the second half behind three points and three assists from guard Johnny Flynn and the Knights could never catch up.

Flynn finished the game with seven points and 10 assists as forwards Paul Harris and  Arinze Onaku from Syracuse helped pave the way to the Orange’s second win over Rutgers this season with 28 combined points and 18 rebounds.

On a positive note for Rutgers, center Hamady N’Diaye showed signs of last year’s brilliance by scoring eight points and pulling in nine boards. N’Diaye has struggled with a back injury throughout Big East play.

Freshman guard Mike Rosario also contributed on RU’s side with 16 points on 6-of-21 shooting, but the Rutgers bench was nothing short of ineffective with just one point, coming from reserve guard Pat Jackson.

The next game for the Scarlet Knights is Saturday at 2 p.m. against South Florida. The game is Senior Day at Rutgers meaning that guard Anthony Farmer and forwards Jaron Griffin and JR Inman will be honored for their time in Piscataway before the game.

New starting lineup fails to lead Knights to win over Providence

By Sam Hellman on 14. Feb, 2009

The new lineup: Head coach Fred Hill Jr. sent out a starting lineup of guards Mike Coburn and Anthony Farmer, forwards Earl Pettis and Jaron Griffin and center Gregory Echenique to combat the Friars, but the lineup proves ineffective as Providence beats RU 78-68.

Bench woes: No one seemed to be able to get anything going off of the bench for Rutgers. Guard Mike Rosario stuggled in his first game off the bench, scoring just five points on one-of-six shooting. Center Hamady N’Diaye played just 13 minutes off the bench  scoring four and pulling in four boards.

Foul trouble: With N’Diaye’s minutes limited, both Pettis and Griffin fouled out at the forward position. Griffin had eight points and five boards on three-of-13 shooting and Pettis remained hot with 13 points and two steals.

Guards step up: The struggles of Rosario in the loss seemed to help some of the other guards as Coburn ended up leading all Rutgers scoreres with 14 points and three assists. Freshman guard Pat Jackson also got in for five minutes of Big East action and had an assist.

RU unable to complete comeback, loses eighth straight

By Sam Hellman on 24. Jan, 2009

Despite cutting the lead to two points after a trio of three pointers by senior Jaron Griffin off the bench, Rutgers was unable to complete a comeback in which the Scarlet Knights trailed by 11 points at the half as the Knights lost to St. John’s 70-59 at MSG.

Rutgers had no answer for the Red Storm’s Paris Hornenside as he scored 27 on the game on 12-of-13 shooting from the field. Griffin’s season-high nine was second for Rutgers as freshman Mike Rosario contributed 16 points on 7-of-16 shooting.

The Scarlet Knights’ (9-11, 0-7) next stop is two trainstops south in Newark as they take on Seton Hall in the Prudential Center Thursday night in search of their first Big East win.

Horne slaying Rutgers at the Garden

By Sam Hellman on 24. Jan, 2009

At the halfway mark, Rutgers is outscoring St. John’s Paris Horne by just eight points as the Scarlet Knights trail St. John’s 37-26 in one of the few winable Big East Games for Rutgers this season.

Rutgers is struggling to put any offense together in the World’s Most Famous Arena as guards Mike Rosario and Corey Chandler are tied for the team lead in points with five apiece.

The Scarlet Knights are hoping to get their first Big East win before heading to Seton Hall Thursday night, but are being outshot by St. John’s 57 percent to 39 percent at halftime.

Rutgers already down big to Louisville

By Sam Hellman on 21. Jan, 2009

Since an early 5-2 lead, the Scarlet Knights have been absolutely decimated by a hot Louisville team. Louisville’s Terrence Williams and Samardo Samuels each have nine points as Louisville leads the Knights 23-7 with eight minutes still to play in the first half.

Statistically, Rutgers should be losing by even more as they are 3-for-15 from the field and 1-for-7 from long range. Louisville has five steals three blocks as RU center Hamady N’diaye has been on the bench since the 12-minute mark with three fouls.

The Scarlet Knights have not scored in 10 minutes.
