It was just minutes after UConn coach Randy Edsall had officially released the depth chart, the one where Cody Endres was officially the starting quarterback, and Endres was trying desperately hard not to sound particularly pumped.
“It’s true,” he said of his name being first, before Zach Frazer’s.
“That’s right,” he said of there being no “OR” between his name and Frazer’s.
“Not really,” he said of having more security. Then he laughed, said “Okay,” and admitted, “It does feel good.”
It should. The 6-foot-4, 223-pound redshirt sophomore led UConn to a Homecoming win over eventual league champ Cincinnati in his first start last year, he started another tough game at West Virginia after that and he went 70 passes without throwing a pick as a reserve. He lost out on the starting spot this year to Notre Dame transfer Zach Frazer, then Frazer hurt his knee in the season’s second game and while Endres rung up wins against Rhode Island and at Baylor, Edsall still said Frazer was his starter, just hurt. But now, with Frazer healthy and telling his local media he’s rust-free, Edsall’s re-thought things. Cody, he said in his Tuesday press conference, “has performed better than Zach.”
Cody’s completed 55 of 83 passes (that’s 66.3 percent) for three touchdowns, an average of 165.8 yards per game and no picks. (Frazer, in two starts, completed 51.2 percent of his passes and was intercepted four times.) He was 17-of-23 in this past weekend’s heartbreaking final-play loss at Pitt, but he was sacked three times and he’ll have a whole new left side of the line – sophomore Mike Ryan replaces junior Dan Ryan, redshirt freshman Erik Kuraczea replaces senior Mathieu Olivier – this weekend against Louisville.
Still, this is what Endres was bred for. He was a grade school defensive end until his dad, a quarterback at Bowling Green, decided his son should play the same position as his old man. He threw for 2,500 yards at a run-first school in Washington, Pa. and he had all the right answers for us in this week’s Keep it Brief.
