Back at it for Rutgers

By Aditi on 15. Sep, 2009

rest In honor of Greg Schiano’s penchant for little mottos, we’ll start this post off with this one: “Work is either fun or drudgery. It depends upon your attitude.”

(Incidentally, I’m still not loving the one in the team room I’ve stared at for three years now: Success is the peace of mind in knowing you did everything you could to be the best you can be. Hmmm…)

After what I keep hearing is the toughest training camp he’s ever run, and after two games in a span of five days, Greg Schiano gave his team off Sunday and Monday. The only mandatory activity was seeing the training staff, if necessary. And meeting the media Monday, if invited. Still, Schiano guessed that a good chunk of guys would still come in to watch film.

I asked center Ryan Blaszczyk what a chunk was. “One hundred percent,” he said.

“How do you know,” I asked. “I know,” he said.

“Yes, but how? Do you sign in when you watch film? Did you captains tell everyone they better come in?” I asked. “Nope, nope,” he said. “We don’t have to tell them anything. We trust each other.”

Seemed like a little more evidence might be useful, so I went over to Devin McCourty. I asked him the same question, how many people would come in on their days OFF to watch film and he said, “All of them.”

I asked him how HE knew. He said, “You can just tell the way this team’s been.”

“More specific please,” I said. ”Guys are just hungry to get better. And they all love football,” he said.

Well then. Let’s see how the rest for the bodies then impacts practice today. Schiano said he’s excited to have a regular week (there was no full-pads practice last week) and there is quite a bit of competition. David Rowe has maybe pulled ahead of Brandon Bing at one corner spot, DC Jefferson has maybe pulled ahead of Shamar Graves at TE. I’ll let you know after practice. I’m headed down to Piscataway now.

I think you’ll get more comments when you blog for the away games, Aditi. Are you going to be live blogging the Maryland game? I’m sure more than a few of us are going to be wanting some support.

Coach Schiano is big fan of former UCLA basketball coach John Wooden, winner of 10 NCAA championships in 12 years from 1964-75. The above is a paraphrased version of Wooden’s definition of success that appears at the top of his famous Pyramid of Success. Check out this website for the complete Pyramid of Success:
