Inman returns to RU starting lineup

By Sam Hellman on 30. Nov, 2008

Rutgers senior forward JR Inman made his first start of the season tonight in the 68-46 win over St Peter’s contributing 10 points, nine rebounds and two blocks. Inman, who was suspended at the start of the season for a violationof team rules, played 26 minutes in the win and was 6-6 from the free throw stripe.

Head coach Fred Hill Jr. started sophomore guard Mike Coburn along with Inman leaving freshman forward Greg Echenique and guar Anthony Farmer to come off the bench.

Sitting out the opening minutes of the game proved to be beneficial for Farmer who scored a team-high 13 points and dished out four assists.

WKU Upsets No.3 Louisville

By Brandon Davis on 30. Nov, 2008

The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers upset the No. 3 ranked Louisville Cardinals 68-54 in Nashville. The Hilltoppers outworked and outplayed the Cards throughout a game in which the Louisville could not buy a basket.

The Cards (2-1) shot an obismal 26% for the game including just 6-30 from the three point line. The Hilltoppers (3-2) finished 46 % from the field. The Cards were also outrebounded by WKU 48-36.

After being tied 28 at the half, the Hilltoppers outscored the Cards 40-26 after intermission. WKU sophmore gurad A.J. Slaughter had a terrific performance and scored a career high 25 points that led all scores. Slaughter also added nine rebounds.

With under eight minutes left in the second half, WKU lead the No. 3 ranked Louisville Cardinals 49-40. The Cardinals have been killed on the boards throughout the game and cannot by a basket as of right now. Terrence Williams is at the line at the break shooting two.

No.3 Cardinals tied with WKU 28-28 at the half

By Brandon Davis on 30. Nov, 2008

The No. 3 ranked Louisville Cardinals and Western Kentucky are tied at 28 going into halftime. The Cardinal offense has looked rusty throughout the first half, while WKU has risen to the challenge. Down 28-25, WKU guard A. J. Slaughter hit a long three pointer as time expired to tie the game to end the first half. The shot came after Louisville took a shot much earlier than coach Rick Pitino would have liked, which led to a fast break wide open shot for Slaughter.

Final: Dayton tops Marquette 89-75

By John Borneman on 29. Nov, 2008

It’s a final here in Hoffman Estates, Ill., where Dayton beat Marquette 89-75 in the final round of the Chicago Invitational.

First of all, the Golden Eagles came out wearing their powder blue uniforms, a sure sign that tough times were in store. Any Marquette fan would tell you the same thing.

As far as the actual game was concerned, Marquette couldn’t find a way to score consistently on offense. The Golden Eagles’ penchant for shooting three pointers – something they got away with in the first two games – came back to bite them as they shot just 20.0 percent (4-of-20) from behind the arc against Dayton.

Marquette coach Buzz Williams didn’t seem to mind the number of 3-point shots (27) the Golden Eagles took in a win against Northern Iowa. I’ll venture a guess that he’s changed his tune tonight.

Marquette turned the ball over 14 times, leading to 18 Dayton points. The Flyers’ bench also outscored the Golden Eagles’ 48-5 (including an 18-0 mark in the first half). Marquette’s transition game – normally a strength – was essentially neutralized as both teams scored four fast-break points.

Basically, Marquette was flat outplayed tonight. Forward Chris Wright led the Flyers with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Guard Rob Lowery had 21 points and guard Chris Johnson added 12 points and 11 boards. The Golden Eagles got 28 points from guard Wesley Matthews and 19 points from guard Dominic James.

Ugly half, but USF leads

By Joe Rienzi on 29. Nov, 2008

USF and Northeastern accounted for 12 turnovers and shot a combined 12-of-48 from the field in the first half. If not for an 11-0 run, the Bulls and Huskies game had a good chance of being outscored by the men’s soccer game. USF led 22-11 at the half, and lead 28-13 with 16 minutes left in the game.

Sophomore guard Dominique Jones leads all scorers with 12 points.

The women’s basketball team went 2-1 on it’s trip to the Virgin Islands for the Paradise Jam. After losing by 30 to No. 3 Cal Wednesday, the Bulls picked up wins against Iowa (3-1) at the time and Texas Tech (who handed Iowa its third loss of the season.

Finally, the men’s soccer team is locked in a scoreless tie with UNC-Greensboro over at the USF soccer stadium, where the crowd is likely twice the size of the one inhabiting the USF Sun Dome.

We’ve got soccer AND hoops in Tampa tonight

By Joe Rienzi on 29. Nov, 2008

Greetings, folks! I hope you all enjoyed your Thanksgiving.

I’m live at the USF Sun Dome, where the Bulls are hosting the Northeastern Huskies.

Twelve minutes remain in the first half, and it’s another slow-start for the Bulls, who lead 7-4.

Sophomore Dominique Jones leads all scorers with four points, and junior Alex Rivas Sanchez started at center for the Bulls. However, he picked up two fouls in the game’s first four minutes.

At 7:30, the men’s soccer team hosts UNC-Greensboro in the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA soccer championships. Once that game kicks off, we’ll have updates.

Preview: Marquette vs. Dayton

By John Borneman on 29. Nov, 2008

A quick look at Marquette (5-0) vs. Dayton (5-0) in the final round of the Chicago Invitational in Hoffman Estates, Ill. tonight.

Probable starters (season stats in parenthesis):
Marquette:
G Dominic James (9.6 ppg, 5.1 apg)
G Jerel McNeal (18.4 ppg, 4.6 rpg)
G Wesley Matthews (21.6 ppg, 6.8 rpg)
F Lazar Hayward (19.6 ppg, 9.6 rpg)
F Dwight Burke (1.8 ppg, 3.2 rpg)

Dayton:
G London Warren (3.2 ppg, 4.4 apg)
G Marcus Johnson (12.4 ppg, 3.6 rpg)
F Charles Little (6.8 ppg, 4.6 rpg)
F Chris Wright (14.0 ppg, 8.0 rpg)
C Kurt Huelsman (3.0 ppg, 5.8 rpg)

Marquette is coming off a 73-43 win over Northern Iowa Friday in which it was never challenged, beginning the game on a 32-8 run. Dayton struggled against Auburn Friday, winning 60-59 in overtime.

The Golden Eagles have been taking quite a few 3-point shots this season, and fired 27 against Northern Iowa. Right now, 3-point shooting is a bit of a sore subject for the Flyers, who went 0-for-24 from deep against Auburn (that’ll put a dent in your percentage).

Marquette coach Buzz Williams doesn’t mind, saying after the game “You know why nobody’s asking why we took so many (3-point shots)? Because nobody here thought they were bad shots.”

This will probably be Marquette’s toughest test to date, and the Golden Eagles will need another strong performance from their trio of senior guards – Wesley Matthews, Dominic James and Jerel McNeal.

More on this one as we go along.
